Motorisation of an existing residential sectional garage door: installing the motorisation rail and motor unit on the ceiling, connecting the system to the door, adjusting the travel, then opening and closing tests before returning it to service.
Shasama Fermetures worked on a residential sectional garage door in Nogent-sur-Marne (94) to motorise an installation that until then had a manually operated sectional door. The job meant installing the motorisation system on the garage ceiling, connecting it to the door, then carrying out the adjustments needed for regular opening and closing.
This project sets out the main stages of motorising a sectional garage door, from preparing the installation through to the operating tests.
What was carried out on site
- Check the sectional door and its operation before motorisation
- Prepare the location for the motorisation system
- Install and fix the guide rail to the ceiling
- Fit the motor unit and connect it to the door
- Adjust the opening and closing positions
- Run several test cycles before returning it to service

From inspection to return to service
This job kept the existing sectional door in place while adding a motorisation suited to how it operates.
Check the existing door
Check how the sectional door operates and prepare the installation of the motorisation system.
Install the rail and the motor
Position and fix the motorisation rail to the garage ceiling, then install the motor unit in line with the door.
Connect the motorisation to the door
Fit the mechanical link that lets the motor drive the door during its opening and closing movements.
Adjust and test the operation
Carry out the necessary adjustments, then check several full opening and closing cycles before returning it to service.

Why motorise a residential sectional garage door?
Motorisation makes it easier to use a sectional door day to day by avoiding manual manoeuvring every time the garage is entered or left.
The motor drives the door along its rails while keeping the operating principle of the existing sectional door.
This solution mainly brings more comfort in use, particularly where the garage is used regularly for a vehicle to pass through.
Motorisation can also make it possible to keep an existing sectional door when it is still in good condition and compatible with fitting a motorised system. Before any motorisation, however, it remains essential to check the door’s overall condition, its balance and how its main mechanical components work.
What to watch for afterwards
After a sectional door is motorised, the whole system should keep working smoothly as it is used.
- Check that the door opens and closes without jerking.
- Watch for any unusual noise coming from the motor, the rails or the mechanical parts.
- Do not force the door when an obstacle or a malfunction is preventing its movement.
- Have the door’s balance and main mechanical components checked regularly.
- Set up a maintenance contract to ensure periodic checks of the sectional door and its motorisation.
