Replacement of the tubular axle of an existing metal shutter: access to the mechanism at the top of the opening, removal of the old axle, preparation and fitting of the new one, refitting of the curtain, adjustments and operating tests before returning it to service.
Shasama Fermetures worked on the metal shutter of a business in Paris (75) to replace its tubular axle. The job meant reaching the mechanism at the top of the opening, removing the existing axle, installing the new one, then refitting the curtain before carrying out the necessary adjustments and tests.
This project sets out the stages of a metal shutter axle replacement in Paris, from preparing the work on the shopfront through to checking the shutter in its open and closed positions.
What was carried out on site
- Secure the work area and clear access to the top of the opening
- Remove the sign and open up the shutter mechanism housing
- Release the curtain from its axle, then remove the old axle
- Prepare, position and fix the new tubular axle
- Refit the curtain onto its new axle and close the housing
- Adjust, then check several opening and closing cycles

From inspection to return to service
This job kept the existing curtain in place while replacing one of the metal shutter’s main mechanical parts.
Prepare the work
Secure the work area and clear access to the mechanism at the top of the closure.
Remove the existing axle
Release the curtain from its axle, then take out the old mechanism to prepare for its replacement.
Install the new axle
Prepare, position and fix the new tubular axle, checking its alignment with the curtain and the guide rails.
Return the shutter to service
Refit the curtain onto its new axle, make the necessary adjustments, then check several opening and closing cycles.

Why replace a metal shutter’s axle?
The axle is essential to how a metal shutter works. Sitting at the top of the opening, it carries the curtain and lets it coil as the shutter opens and closes.
Over time, worn components, repeated loads or a mechanical failure can make the shutter hard to operate, jerky, or block it altogether.
Where the curtain and the shutter’s other parts remain in good condition, replacing the axle can put the equipment back in service without necessarily replacing the whole shutter.
What to watch for afterwards
After an axle replacement, the metal shutter should keep running evenly as it is used.
- Check that the curtain rises and lowers correctly in its guide rails.
- Report any unusual noise, jerk or difficulty in operation without delay.
- Do not force the shutter if it jams or the curtain sits out of line.
- Put a maintenance contract in place so the main mechanical parts and the closure’s general operation are checked periodically.
